The Lead Educator
Your educator on this course is Michael Hobbs, who has worked his whole career in the mobile industry, for companies large and small. He started work writing software to test mobile networks for O2. In those days mobile phones just made calls – no texts, no colour screens, and definitely no Facebook! What was worse, was you had to be loaded to own one. However, he could see that they might catch on someday.
Later, Michael fell out of love with big company life and set up his own businesses. One was about football betting through premium rate texts. It was legal for two weeks before the rules were changed, so the company had to close! The other company sold mobile content – those annoying ringtones that people used to buy.
On joining Accenture, Michael set up our iPhone programming group, shortly after the iPhone was launched. This group went on to build mobile apps for banks and shops. When you look at your bank account, it may well be this group’s app that you are using.
This is what Michael has to say about his work. “What I really like doing is finding out what works for people! You can design a digital product with the best intentions, but until it’s out there you’re never quite sure whether it’s going to work for them. Right now, I am fascinated by voice services and Alexa. I started work with voice and it looks to be coming back.”
“Choosing mobile has worked really well for me, but you have to keep changing. The industry I started with isn’t the industry I am in now. It’s much more interesting!”
